Write the current age of the child (in completed years) based on the child's month and year of birth.
The ages of all living children should be recorded in completed years. For example, a child who will become 3 years old next week should be recorded as “02” today. A child aged less than one year will be recorded as age “00”.
Sometimes a mother does not know the current age of her child. In this case, you may rephrase the question to: "How many years ago was Jun born?" You can also use other available information. You can relate Jun's age to the age of another child whom she knows. For example, the mother may know that her youngest child was born 2 years ago, and that Jun was five years old at that time, in which case, Jun is seven years old now.
NOTE: You MUST record an age for all children who are still alive.
CONSISTENCY CHECK: DATE OF BIRTH AND AGE
You are not finished with Q.222 (Age) until you have checked the consistency between Q.220 (Date of Birth) and Q.222. Check their consistency by using the procedures explained for the consistency checking of entries in Q.105 and Q.106 in Section 7.1 of this manual. You can use either the arithmetic procedure or the Age-Birth Date Consistency Chart. Both procedures are explained following Q.105 and Q.106.
The arithmetic procedure is summarized here. Add the year of birth and the age. If the child has had his/her birthday this year (month of birth is prior to month of interview), the sum should be 2003. If the child has not had a birthday yet this year (month of birth is after month of interview), the sum should be 2002. If the child's month of birth is the same as the month of interview, or if the month of birth is not known, the sum can be either 2002 or 2003.
If year of birth plus age do not add up to 2002 or 2003 as appropriate, probe to get consistent information. For example, if the sum equals 2002 and it should be 2003, then you need to add 1 to either the age or the year of birth after checking with the respondent to see which one is wrong. If the sum adds up to 2004 and it should be 2003, you need to subtract 2 from either the age or the year of birth or else subtract 1 from both the age and the year of birth.
