Warning: these figures indicate the number of cases found in the data file. They cannot be interpreted as summary statistics of the population of interest.
Ask the respondent for each pregnancy reported, whether the baby was born alive, born dead, or lost before full term. Encircle the appropriate code in Q.216. If born alive, the next question to be asked is Q.218. If “born dead”, probe that this is so by asking Q.217.
If the response to Q.217 is YES, then the baby was born alive but died later. Thus, Q.218-Q.220 will be asked and Q.221 will have a code “2” encircled. If the response to Q.217 is “NO”, skip to Q.226.
Encircle code "3" if the child was lost before full term.

Description
Baby born alive or dead - if the baby was born alive or dead
1. Live birth - the complete expulsion or extraction from its mother of a product of conception, irrespective of the duration of pregnancy, which after such separation, breathes or shows any other evidence of life, such as beating of the heart, pulsation of the umbilical cord, definite movement of voluntary muscles, whether or not the umbilical cord has been cut or the placenta is attached. Each product of such a birth is considered live-born. (Note that there is no minimum age or size for live births)
2. Nonlive birth:
Stillbirth - defined as fetal death of 28 completed weeks of gestation or more. The death is indicated by the fact that after separation from its mother, the fetus does not breathe or show any evidence of life such as beating of the heart, pulsation of the umbilical cord, or of definite movement of voluntary muscles.
Abortion - popularly used to refer to induced early fetal deaths, including both those which are legal and those which are illegal. In medical usage, an abortion is the expulsion of the fetus prematurely, particularly at any time before it is capable of sustaining life.
Miscarriage - is popularly employed to refer to spontaneous or accidental termination of fetal life occurring early in pregnancy.
